TECHNOLOGICAL LITERACY THIS WEEK

We will continue to work through the twenty standards identified
by the ITEA as critical to achieving technological literacy for
students. This week, we present the standards associated with
"Design." In addition, we're adding a new "how-to" section
after the standards to show you how to introduce these concepts
to your children at home or in the classroom. Read on!

STANDARDS RELATED TO DESIGN
-- from the ITEA's Technology for All American's project.

Standard 8: Students will develop an understanding of the
attributes of design.

Standard 9: Students will develop an understanding of
engineering design.

Standard 10: Students will develop an understanding of the role
of troubleshooting, research and development, invention and
innovation, and experimentation in problem solving.

TRY THIS AT HOME OR IN YOUR CLASS!

These three standards can be emphasized at home or in the
classroom by doing hands-on activities and going on field trips
related to engineering design. Encourage your kids to analyze
their skateboards, rollerblades, or any other items that
provide them with real-world examples of design. Challenge them
to find a design "flaw" in some device, and make a
recommendation on how to correct it!

STILL MORE ON THE ITEA NEXT WEEK!

We have two more Technological Literacy Updates coming that
will cover the remainder of the ITEA's 20 Standards for
Technological Literacy. Hopefully, you can find a moment to
integrate some of this information into your daily routine with
your students or family this week. Together, we can build a
brighter future for students around the world by preparing them
to use technology as naturally as they use a pencil and paper!

Until next week!
